After birth, some people use an abdominal binder or postpartum garment for a feeling of support. The appropriate time to begin and the type of product depend on the delivery, incision status, symptoms, comfort, and recommendations from the obstetric care team.
After Vaginal Birth
There is no universal rule requiring a faja within the first 24 to 48 hours after delivery.
If you want to use one, ask your OB-GYN or midwife whether it is appropriate for you, especially if you experienced:
- Significant tearing
- Pelvic-floor symptoms
- Heavy bleeding
- Blood-pressure complications
- Another medical concern during delivery or recovery
After Cesarean Birth
Abdominal binders are sometimes used after a cesarean birth to provide a feeling of support and comfort.
Research has evaluated their possible effects on pain and mobility, but abdominal binders should not be presented as a way to guarantee faster healing, remove fluid, accelerate uterine recovery, or prevent complications.
Use only a product and wearing schedule approved by your obstetric team. The garment should not rub the incision, trap moisture against it, or place painful pressure on the surgical area.
Postpartum Compression and Diastasis Recti
A postpartum garment may provide temporary external support, but it cannot bring separated abdominal muscles back together by itself.
An evaluation and individualized exercise guidance from an OB-GYN, pelvic-floor physical therapist, or another qualified healthcare professional may be helpful.
Breastfeeding and General Recovery
The garment should allow you to breathe, sit, feed your baby, and move comfortably.
It should not be so tight that it causes:
- Increased pain
- Acid reflux
- Pelvic pressure
- Numbness
- Difficulty taking a full breath
- Irritation around an incision
Seek urgent medical care if you experience heavy bleeding, chest pain, shortness of breath, a severe headache, fever, calf pain or swelling, or concerning changes around an incision.
How to Choose a Postpartum Garment
Look for:
- Adjustable support
- Soft and breathable fabric
- Practical bathroom access
- Easy-to-use closures
- A fit based on your current postpartum measurements
- A design that does not place painful pressure on an incision
Avoid products that promise weight loss, a permanently smaller waist, prevention of stretch marks, or automatic correction of diastasis recti.
